Enter alternate reality.
If the Democratic party had a winner-take-all system similar to what 48 states do with the electoral college in the presidential election, things might look a little different right now.
Below is a list of all the primary & caucus results and their official distribution of delegates. On the right is a what-if scenario showing the distribution of delegates if the allocation were winner-take-all.
The totals, excluding super delegates:
As is:
Obama: 1,745.5
Clinton: 1639.5
Winner-take-all:
Obama: 1,583
Clinton: 1,826
That's a decent swing towards Clinton.
What this doesn't reflect is how the outcome of early winner-take-all primaries might have influenced the later results. Indiana, Texas and Ohio were all relatively close votes with loads of delegates at stake and they were later in the primary season. They might have been influenced by earlier outcomes.
I'm not a fan of winner take all. I am a fan of the boost that the electoral college gives to smaller states. Proportional distribution + the boost to make smaller states matter a bit more.
